“Hey Papa!” “Hey What?” “I think you need to talk to Nana,” she said with the kind of concern a 4-year-old has for another loved one when they are acting, oh for lack of a better word, you know, kinda funny. “Uh oh-what did she do now?” I asked eyebrows raised with a similar concern, knowing this could be a problem since, in the long run, I was the one that was going to have to deal with Nana. “She ate a hummingbird” she said matter-of-factly, both palms up, shaking her head in disappointment. “She did?” I asked, getting suddenly concerned now myself remembering that I had heard Nana’s stomach making funny noises after lunch. “Yep, she spread it on a cracker, and ate it. Just like that.” And then without any encouragement from me, “Then I heard her stomach make some noises Papa, it sounded like a hummingbird was caught in there” she said. “Are you sure about all that?” I asked, suddenly very concerned considering this corroborating evidence. “Oh yeah” she said dismissively waving a hand at me like the Queen in a motorcade, “I’m SURE of it!” Nana, sitting in the other room listening to yet conversation going downhill, finally had to weigh in. “hey you two-I was eating hummus, not hummingbirds. I was eating hummus!” We looked at each other, all four eyebrows raised now, mouths curled at the corners, silently shaking our heads knowingly because we already both had all the proof we needed to know what REALLY happened.
