I love this time of the year, when the lakes are quiet and calm before The GRR happens (Great Rush To Relax), every year like clockwork on Memorial Day. I’ve been particularly fretting about our loon populations, already in great decline due to black flies driving them off their nests, poor outcomes for the young that do hatch and new worries about their wintering habitats. Absolutely NOTHING is more indicative of living in the North than the lonely cry of a loon at dusk over a calm lake. The GRR needs constant educating, reminding, tempering, scolding-whatever it takes. Please do your part-a loon will call to thank you.
