Their tender growth frozen solid in ice, encased like jewels after being sprinkled with water all night long to protect them from freezing, this large crowd of young cranberry uprights begins to stir awake after another long cold night. The only noise besides the “psshh, psshh, psshh” of the sprinkler heads is the muffled sound of their excited voices, faraway from beneath the ice, as they patiently await the thawing warmth of the rising sun.
