Although I lost my beautiful crest decades ago, I still remember the days when I could strut around showing it off to this one particular Finnish female I was hoping to attract who hung out on the far side of the pond. I could open that baby up like a huge fan and when it caught the light of the morning sun, as much as they tried, some girls just couldn’t look away. Up North in the 70’s, as in wilderness areas everywhere, females were in short supply, so we knew we had to do what Darwin said we had to do. It eventually worked although she still says it was more the result of taking loving pity on such a silly-acting funny-looking creature than the beauty of my particular crest, but I still relate to these guys who just refuse to give it a rest. (hooded mergansers).
