Towards the end of color season, long after the maples are done with their short and showy flaunt and the birches and popples reluctantly vibrate in bright yellow for a few days against the deep blue sky, the oaks, in a good year, begin to slowly caramelize. Their burnt oranges, golden hues and red rusts creates a subtle, more sophisticated beauty that if you let it penetrate, will get you through the harshest of winters.
